SOMETHING TO DISCUSS

Sharjah 2016 | ENERGY, INDUSTRY & ENVIRONMENT | COLUMN

TBY talks to Lars Seistrup, Managing Director of Damen Shipyards, on the sector.

Outside of the UAE, in terms of customers, which areas do you focus on?

If we talk about repairs, because it is different for building new ships, our focus is mainly on vessels that are operating in the Gulf area. That is what we do here in Sharjah and Dubai, whereas in Fujairah we are repairing all of the vessels passing through, which means that they are typically not working in the Gulf but just passing, because it is located on one of the main shipping routes between Europe and Asia.

What is your relationship with the government of Sharjah like?

The new shipyard in Hamriyah was inaugurated by HH Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, member of the Supreme Council of the UAE and the Ruler of Sharjah in January 2014. We have a close contact and excellent support from HE Sheikh Khaled Al Qasimi, the Chairman of Sharjah Port and Hamriyah Free Zone, and it is very easy for me to consult him if I have something to discuss. It's a huge benefit for us to have such a strong support from Sharjah Port and Hamriyah Free Zone.
