Mousa Mohsen

What initiatives are there in Ras Al Khaimah that contribute to the green economy?

Ras Al Khaimah is in the process of advancing green building principles for protecting the environment and ensuring sustainability in the Emirate. Government bodies and leaders understand the importance of sustainable development and support green building concepts; however, we also need change in the attitudes and demands related to the sustainably built environment in the community. This takes some time and is not an easy task. Currently we are working closely with RAK Municipality as the regulatory body to develop new green building codes and regulations. This is extremely important to ensure all buildings in the Emirate achieve green status. In particular, we are conducting energy modeling for different types of buildings. Based on this modeling and simulation, we will work with the municipality to draw-up the code and regulations. This will have an impact on the building industry, and the selection of building materials such as insulation, paints, coatings, and glass will be very important. Green building concepts focus on improving energy use efficiency and require clean electricity generation, such as solar power.
