TBY talks to John Donoghue, CEO, National Fiber Networks (NFN) Mexico, on the sector.

John Donoghue

What is NFN's role in the Mexican ICT market?

We are a neutral infrastructure provider that currently works with municipalities, state governments, and the federal government in PPPs to bring investment to Mexico. We are infrastructure providers and do not compete with concessionaires; thae government is pleased that a company can build a system that everyone can use. The fastest-growing sector in Mexico in 2016 was telecommunications at 10%, five times the GDP growth rate. It will be the fastest-growing sector in 2017 and beyond.

What are the benefits of digital infrastructure for sectors such as health and education?

We are at a point currently where there are great benefits of digital infrastructure. In healthcare, for example, there are critical surgeries being conducted in remote locations because of digital infrastructures. Many universities today are online. When hurricanes and earthquakes hit North America, social media emerged as a critical tool; many lives were saved because of digital infrastructure. With the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G, a whole new door of possibilities will open for the entire industry.
