TBY talks to Robert C. Debbas, Chairman, Debbas Holding, on the sector.

Robert C. Debbas

How has the company evolved since its founding?

My father established Debbas Group in 1910, and my oldest brother took over the business in 1949. Our main activities are professional lighting, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) contracting. Today, one of our major activities is providing services to EDL, and we are responsible for the South Lebanon area. Our lighting activities are extremely important to the company. We work through 12 companies and have a good percentage of the niche market we serve, which is high-end institutional lighting. We have been interested in new energy technologies, both wind and solar, for about 10 years now. We have been shortlisted with two other companies for a project to install a new wind farm, which we are awaiting approval from the government for. We also bid for solar energy projects.

What are some of the more iconic projects you have worked on?

We worked on the New Delhi International Airport, which is an iconic project. We did the railway stations in Jeddah and Medina, which was also an important project. We have done a number of prestigious projects in Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia. In Lebanon, we did the Beirut Airport project.
