TBY talks to Russell Byrne, Co-founder & CEO, Education Consortium (EC) on the sector.

Russell Byrne

What is the philosophy behind the EC's initiatives?

The EC is the brainchild of Dr. Hanan Al-Mutawa and myself. Our long-term vision is to improve and upgrade the standards of education within Kuwait and the surrounding region to ensure that graduates are on par with other students around the world. EC's primary objective is to successfully and seamlessly upgrade the skills and education levels of the population by providing inspirational and empowering educational solutions for each child. The underpinning philosophy across all EC education facilities is to provide high-quality education in a warm and friendly environment.

What is your overall outlook on the current state of education in Kuwait?

The business of education is a difficult proposition here. There are many profit-centric educational offerings here and it is a difficult market to wade through, not only as an educator, but also as a parent. The problem is economies of scale and tackling core societal issues that encourage certain unnecessary behaviors and attitudes in the present system. However, it is not all doom and gloom, because there are institutions like us that believe in the power of the human spirit and have a strong ethical drive to do what is right for the present state of education and the future.
