TBY talks to Juan José Zonta Sing, GM of Healthcare Products Centroamerica, on the nuances of the Central American market, international partnerships, and regional expansion in Latin America.

What are some particularities specific to the medical sector in Panama?

Ours is a highly competitive market with considerable demand for top quality products. Accordingly, all players within this sector maintain high standards and produce or import only those products that meet stringent standards set by the government of Panama for its acquisitions and transactions.

Could you tell us about the domestic operations of Healthcare Products Centroamerica and how it contributes to the development of the broader healthcare sector in Panama?

We have two main objectives, the first being to invest in the country so as to contribute to the development of the local economy, helping to create employment in the sector, thereby improving the overall standard of living for all stakeholders involved. We also contribute to state revenue through taxes, which then provide social security, services, and benefits to the population at large. Furthermore, we have a scholarship program for students from underprivileged backgrounds to study engineering degrees at two public universities. Our second objective is to import and integrate innovative medical ideas, equipment, supplies, and sustainable new generation technologies so that patients have the best quality services and supplies at their disposal at all times, providing added comfort and convenience, as well as a faster recuperation process. Also, through our operations in the sector, we help save resources in terms of limiting operational and maintenance costs, which helps allocate resources to other areas of the nation.

Can you tell us about your product portfolio?

Our portfolio includes equipment and services for treating and disposing of biologically infectious hospital waste, on-site oxygen production systems, all types of hospital beds, sterilization centers, ventilators, EKG, patient monitoring systems, and 220 other kinds of commercial products and equipment.

Who are your key clients in Panama?

We supply the Ministry of Health, the social security network, and all hospitals on a national level.

How would you rate the quality level of medical equipment and supplies in the Panamanian medical sector?

There are specific and rigid quality standards for each type of medical equipment we sell, and everything has to abide by those standards for us to be able to sell products to the state; these standards are fully in step with top international standards and technical requirements.

How well does your company comply with international norms and standards when providing products for the healthcare sector in Panama?

We fully comply with the most stringent international quality and technical standards. Panamanian law requires that we do.

What other projects are you involved in?

Our company is currently active in seven countries, and has been around for more than 18 years. We have operations in Costa Rica, Panama, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Dominican Republic. So we are active in diverse markets, and we are a big player with a lot of experience in Central American and the Caribbean. Our main area of focus for doing business is the state, with governments being our main clients, and we want to expand and create as many projects as we can in this arena, providing specialized products and solutions as are demanded by our clients and our patients throughout the country and the region.
