General Manager, The St. Regis Abu Dhabi

Oliver Key was hired by Starwood Hotels & Resorts in April 2011 after a three year spell with Emaar Hospitality. He was tasked with preparing The St. Regis Abu Dhabi, which opened its doors in August 2013. He was singled out by Emaar’s Chairman, Mohammed Ali Alabbar, to spearhead the opening of Emaar’s flagship development The Armani Hotel Dubai. This project carried a tremendous weight of expectation given the well-established Armani brand name, as well as being located in the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa. The opening event saw The Armani Hotel Dubai jump from pre-opening trials to 100% occupancy in the presence of Giorgio Armani, together with over 50 international journalists and VIPs from the world of fashion and the local region in attendance.

The St. Regis Abu Dhabi has announced the opening of the Remí¨de Spa. What is the range of services on offer, and are they proving popular with Abu Dhabi residents and guests?

Our Remí¨de Spa is the first in the UAE, and the St. Regis exclusive brand offers 25 different personalized spa treatments, including facials, massages, body treatments, and spa packages for men and women alike. One of the UAE’s largest at 3,200 sqm, Remí¨de Spa features 11 private treatment rooms with magnificent wet areas and relaxation lounges. All of our spa treatments are performed by highly trained masseurs and aestheticians, and ours is the first in the UAE to offer real oxyceutical therapies, in which oxygen is infused into the treatment to drive visible results. Remí¨de Spa has seen strong demand from a wide range of clients, including international business travelers looking to relax after a long week of work, leisure travelers seeking an unforgettable spa experience, and Abu Dhabi residents who want to treat themselves on a special occasion. All of Remí¨de Spa’s treatments are customized to our clients’ individual needs and concerns. The St. Regis Splendor treatment has proven especially popular, as it includes diamond micro-dermabrasion to resurface the skin, followed by an exfoliation of enzymes, body butters, and a mask.

How would you categorize the bulk of your guests, and what is it that brings them to Abu Dhabi?

Our guests are predominantly business travelers, making our location on the Corniche in the heart of the city ideal. We are close to government and corporate centers, embassies, oil and gas company headquarters, and other leading corporate offices. Our bespoke offerings cater to the leisure traveler as well. Guests that travel with their families, or those that wish to can extend their stay in Abu Dhabi and relax at our Nation Riviera Beach Club or explore the city’s many cultural attractions. We are also proud to be a part of the exciting and diverse development of Nation Towers, which comprises the 60-shop Nation Galleria Mall, 30 floors of corporate office space, and 360 state-of-the-art apartments in the connecting tower.

What times of the year do you see most business, and what are some of the major Abu Dhabi events that bring in the most guests?

The St. Regis Abu Dhabi has seen strong business since it opened in August 2013, with major events including the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix, Abu Dhabi Art, and the Abu Dhabi Film Festival, specifically driving guest arrivals at the hotel. Enhancing Abu Dhabi’s standing as a leisure destination, we have hosted and sponsored influential sporting events in line with the St. Regis tradition, including the Ghantoot Pink Polo event that raises the awareness of breast cancer, and the Bentley Al Ain Tour. We have also reached out to the local community by hosting an exhibition of Abu Dhabi Art Hub artist Roman Frances, and launching La Scuola di Cucina for guests to learn Italian cooking at Villa Toscana. Further enhancing The St. Regis Abu Dhabi’s role as a key member of the Abu Dhabi community, in February 2014, we will host Gourmet Abu Dhabi’s Awards Gala Dinner, the top awards for the capital’s gastronomic scene. Abu Dhabi saw strong tourism growth in 2013, with double-digit growth in revenue according to the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority, and we will continue to develop our partnerships to further enhance Abu Dhabi’s standing as a major cultural and tourism destination.
