Karim Bizid has over 26 years of experience in the hotel industry, including in the UAE, Italy, the Dominican Republic, Austria, Greece, Switzerland, and Tunisia. He is a graduate of the Swiss School of Hotel and Tourism Management and studied at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He also has an MBA from the University of Economy and Management.

Who is the typical guest who chooses to stay at The Oberoi, Dubai, and which trends are you witnessing in terms of nationalities, age range, and customer preferences?

Oberoi Hotels & Resorts is known for its all-round excellence and legendary service, making it the preferred choice of the discerning traveler, be it a business or leisure trip. Since the opening of The Oberoi, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, India, and the UK have been the top-three key source markets. We are also seeing an increase in numbers of guests from Australia, Japan, and China, which is encouraging. The Oberoi, Dubai has been a preferred choice for guests from different affluent walk of life, from Bollywood celebrities to well-known dignitaries from the GCC region and India.

Considering the coming World Expo 2020, how are you preparing to accommodate some of the 25 million tourists who are expected to visit Dubai for the event?

Dubai's World Expo 2020 is part of long-term vision that ensures sustainable national development and a prosperous future for the UAE. The Oberoi, Dubai is very actively promoting our hotel to different markets while taking parts in trade shows which are organized in and outside the UAE. The hotel has multilingual staff and customized offerings for different source markets.

Part of the hotel's success is its spectacular location in Dubai. What are the peculiarities of Dubai as a touristic destination?

The hotel enjoys a central location and is within minutes from Downtown Dubai and the UAE's biggest shopping mall, The Dubai Mall.

Considering your experience, how do you see the sector evolving in the medium term and playing a role in helping Dubai to diversify its economy?

The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) is already working with its tourism partners in both government and the private sector to put in place the infrastructure and processes needed to meet the demand of the 25 million visitors expected for World Expo 2020. The results are immediate and this reflects that Dubai is delivering as promised.
