Sheikh Abdulla bin Mohammed Al Hamed is a member of Abu Dhabi Executive Council and is currently Chairman of DoH. He previously served as chairman of the Abu Dhabi Energy Authority and chairman of the Regulation and Supervision Bureau - Abu Dhabi. He has held various leading posts in Abu Dhabi government organizations, including undersecretary of the Ruler's Representative Court House of the Western Region, chairman of the Western Region Development Council, and managing director of the European affairs department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In addition, he was also undersecretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Marylhurst College in the US and an MBA from New York Institute of Technology, Abu Dhabi branch.


What are the most impactful ways in which the Department of Health drove its structural reforms and policies around the national vision?
DoH has strategised six key pillars that underpin its goal of improving the well-being of Abu Dhabi residents through prevention as well as access to integrated, innovative, high-quality, and cost-effective healthcare. Quality remains at the forefront of DoH's priorities as it strives to continue enhancing the calibre of services whilst providing a safe and exceptional overall patient experience. In addition, DoH continues to work toward ensuring the delivery of comprehensive, continuous, and timely healthcare services to citizens and residents. As the healthcare regulator in the Emirate, DoH has developed a stringent set of policies and operational guidelines aimed at ensuring operational efficiency and boosting healthcare research. This is one of the most impactful ways in which DoH drove its structural reforms and policies around the UAE Government Vision 21.

What are the distinguishing features of care offered in Abu Dhabi, and how does it synergize with the national offering?
Abu Dhabi plays a chief role in the national healthcare landscape by bringing more investments and attracting key players in the industry to the region and the Emirate in particular. Abu Dhabi has also taken important strides in promoting innovation and digital health and offers distinguishing features of care including health data analytics, health information exchange, patient empowerment using mobility platforms, and telemedicine. DoH is intent on harnessing the power of technology to serve the healthcare industry, through investing in integrated health information systems to improve the overall quality of care and ensure patients' health and safety in the Emirate. DoH continues to work in line with the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention and has integrated its efforts to provide exemplary medical services to ensure meeting the UAE's key objectives and synergizing with the national offering.

Abu Dhabi's medical sector is noteworthy for its international partnerships. What is the Department of Health's role in fostering these collaborations?
DoH's Capacity Master Plan (CMP) plays a crucial role in fostering international partnerships with the department by attracting key players in the healthcare industry to the Emirate. Through CMP, DoH strives to spur investment opportunities for the continued development and expansion of the healthcare capacity and services provision. This is implemented chiefly to meet the growing demand for healthcare services in Abu Dhabi. A recent example was signing a joint venture with Mayo Clinic Hospital to operate Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, the largest and most advanced hospital in the UAE. DoH continuously strives to learn from global success stories and showcase its own experience with others to open gateways for cooperation between different sectors that ultimately serves to improve patients' experiences, fill the gaps of specialties needed, and identify ideal geographic medical requirements.

What major innovations has the Department of Health sought to attract in order to advance Abu Dhabi's standard of care?
DoH has launched a series of digital health driven initiatives set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the healthcare sector. Some of these partnerships incorporated projects including: localized diabetes risk calculator and cardiovascular risk calculator. In addition, DoH has collaborated with Saal to implement AI to provide insights on competency, training gaps, up-coding, and other trends in the medical sector. Furthermore, DoH has collaborated with Etisalat for the development of a digital healthcare center to drive innovation in the areas of chronic disease management and digital health, in addition to the use of blockchain, AI technologies, and big data to enhance the sector's outputs and quality of services. DoH has also launched an AI Lab to foster a new culture of innovation and inspiring cross-industrial collaboration in the sector with the aim to develop healthcare solutions through emerging technologies.
