Local and international hotels are playing an equally crucial role in helping Qatar realize its National Tourism Sector Strategy 2030.

Axel Gasser

General Manager, Mondrian Doha

Mondrian Doha was established right after the blockade. Mondrian Doha is not a typical hotel; it is a unique hotel and more of a destination. The hotel was built with the future of Qatar in mind. It is about the individualization of guests' needs. The hotel was built by a visionary designer, based on the concept of the story of One Thousand and One Nights. This hotel truly resembles that, as guests can experience something different every single night. To bring all of this to life, we have a different recruitment strategy for each venue. We receive clients from all across the world. We have lots of fashion and lifestyle clients. We also cater to local families on a staycation, as well as corporate and government groups. We cater largely to the wedding market; we have the second-largest ballroom in Doha. We have done some brand launches too and hosted launch events for MS and Louis Vuitton. Our 860-sqm penthouse is especially unique for product launches. We have also hosted concerts of famous stars, such as Jennifer Lopez and Sean Paul, fashion shows, and royal weddings. Regarding Qatar's potential as a tourism destination, the government has done an excellent job in terms of opening new markets. The tourism sector is in its early stages, but the 2022 FIFA World Cup will put Qatar on the main stage. The direction is clear in terms of what Qatar wants to be, and that is to be different than other regional destinations. It is becoming a hub for sports, culture, and education.

Ramzi Assily

General Manager, Hotel Golden Tulip Doha

We have an excellent location. We are not far from Souq Waqif, the Museum of Islamic Arts, and the National Museum of Qatar that opened in March 2019. We are 15-minute drive from Hamad International Airport. We really have a prime location here. Hotel Golden Tulip Doha has 193 rooms, including 22 one-bedroom apartments and 16 studios. The rest of the rooms are split into suites, executive suites, and standard rooms. We have two restaurants. One offers all-day dining and the other will be a themed restaurant. We are looking at serving regional Indian food. We expect the restaurant to open in early 2020. The hotel also has a lobby cafe. On the first floor, we have three meeting rooms with a maximum capacity of about 100 people. On the top floor, we have a fully equipped gym with modern equipment and four spa-treatment rooms. Our rooftop swimming pool is on the 15th floor. We are expanding more on our food and beverage offerings. We are growing into the catering business and promoting our image at events such as weddings, product launches, and corporate events. We have three types of clients. The first are long-stay guests who occupy our 22 apartments, 16 studios, and some rooms. About 25% of our occupancy rate are long-stay guests. The rest of our clients are mostly corporate, such as construction companies and banks. We do have some leisure business over the weekends. Corporate business is our number one segment.

The five-year plan, which was approved by the Supreme Council for Economic Affairs and Investment, is of crucial importance to accelerate the pace of tourism projects that will attract tourists to Qatar. The strategy introduces a tourism blueprint for the country, outlining how this positioning will come to life over the next five years. This blueprint identifies six geographic zones across the country and ties each zone to tourism themes based on the area's geographic characteristics and natural assets.
