The construction sector in the country is becoming more professional, with better efficiency, specialties, equipment, and manpower.

Imad S. Gholmieh

President & CEO, Nesma & Partners

Nesma & Partners has been in the contracting business for almost 40 years. We started as a civil and building construction company. We explored new possibilities over the years and succeeded in developing our capabilities and extending our specialties into electrical, mechanical, and the oil and gas sectors. Flexibility is a great thing about Nesma & Partners. We have proven ourselves as one of the few contracting companies in the region that built its own strong foundations in business to perform various types of projects and complete across the whole spectrum of the construction industry. We developed ourselves as a trustworthy contractor in the region, working considerably with well-known repeat clients such as SABIC, Maaden, and Saudi Aramco in oil and gas projects executing refineries; gas, oil, and separation plants; and other downstream facilities. We have also developed our capacity in executing civil and building projects. Our projects in this area vary from small to mega projects, hotels, hospitals, shopping centers, and so on.

Mahmoud Chabaan

CEO, Saudi Building & Construction Management (SBCM)

Our core business remains construction and project management. We work with the main players to develop lands into projects. We have several new projects coming up, and there are some interesting projects we are working on. It takes us six to eight months between the time we start an idea until it is implemented. If all these projects go well, we will see them starting in 2019. It takes time to do the design and conduct feasibility studies. We focus on the private sector, which is in line with Vision 2030. However, in the construction and development cycle, there is not much happening in terms of privatization. Also in line with the Vision, cities such as Jeddah, Mecca, and Medina will prosper. We are doing a project next to the metro station. Once the metro is operational, this land could be extremely valuable. Once we better understand the traffic flow, then we will get sub-developers to develop a few pieces of land. There could be new hotels or other projects in the next 10-year cycle.

Yaseen Bakheet

Chairman, Bakheet

Bakheet started in the construction business more than 45 years ago. We were initially contractors for government projects, including the Islamic University of Medina, a project to renovate and expand Quba Mosque, and government schools. Subsequently, many competitors entered the construction business in Medina, and we looked at new opportunities. We started to sell cement mixers imported from the Netherlands and added larger equipment, such as the Schwing brand of concrete pumps from Germany. We also acquired the dealership for earth-moving equipment and excavators from the Japanese brand Kobelco. About 15 years ago we started to sell all types of road equipment for the Wirtgen Group. We have a cranes business with Link-Belt Cranes from the US. We also work with many other brands in our light equipment business. Bakheet now has nine branches in the Kingdom. Our main branches are in Jeddah, Dammam, Abha, Riyadh, and Medina. We have other smaller branches that just cover spare parts for our customers.

Murat Giray

CEO, Saudi Arabian Baytur

We have a great name in the market for our niche projects. Our strength is our ability to do extremely technical, highly sophisticated, and complex buildings. We have been working at King Khalid University since 2009; we have five different contracts there that have continued one after another. We have worked on several different contracts for Aramco, including the Rabigh Petrochemical project, and a housing project in east Dammam. We also completed the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in Dhahran and a project for Aramco at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. Saudi Arabian Baytur has a strong footprint in the Mecca area as well; we are building Jabal Omar Phase Two for 1,100-keys, five-star hotels. We are already in line for newly announced megaprojects as well. We have started to receive statements of interest and so forth for the Red Sea Project. We are working on another project in the same region as the NEOM project, and thus are already mobilized in that area.
