MARITIME MAKES WAY

In January 2014, Qatar approved the delivery of LNG to Pakistan’s Qasim Port, which will take place in November 2014. A crucial part of such LNG trade, especially to new markets like Pakistan, is in the successful delivery of gas and in large volumes.

The Qatar Gas Transport Company (Nakilat) is the leading shipping company in Qatar that works with Qatargas, RasGas, and Qatar Petroleum to ship LNG. It is the largest LNG ship owner in the world with a fleet of 54 LNG vessels and four liquefied petroleum gas carriers. Established in 2004, Nakilat operates the Q-Max and Q-Flex LNG carriers, among the largest in the world.

In 2007, Nakilat founded the Nakilat-Keppel Offshore & Marine with Singaporean marine company the Keppel Corporation to operate the complete spectrum of ship repair services. In 2010, it joined with Dutch shipyards firm the Damen Group to create the Damen Shipyards Qatar, the most advanced of its kind in the world.

Integrated transport and supply chain solutions provider, Milaha, has a 30% stake in Nakilat as well as stakes in nine LNG vessels. Milaha’s offshore subsidiary Halul Offshore is the single-largest provider of offshore supply service vessels to Qatar’s oil and gas industry. Milaha’s Chairman and managing director Sheikh Ali bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani told TBY of the company’s effort to expand its downstream offerings, “We are involved in the transport of ammonia using our gas carriers, which are time-chartered to Muntajat, the newly formed petrochemicals marketing company of Qatar. Milaha is feedering, on an exclusive basis, low-density polyethylene, high density polyethylene and linear low density polyethylene from QAPCO, Q-Chem, and Qatofin, from Mesaieed to hub ports in the Gulf.” Since 2011, Milaha has been responsible for operations and management duties at Doha Port.

EXPAND & ALIGN

The engineering and construction sector is booming, especially with the Vision 2030 in sight. Chiyoda Almana Engineering has been operating in Qatar since 2008. The company has constructed 12 of Qatar’s 14 LNG trains, which make up some 90% of the country’s total LNG output capacity. Its most recent trains, the 6 No Mega LNG Trains, are alone able to produce 7.8 million tons per annum of LNG. Chiyoda Almana Managing Director Shizuka Ikawa cites the importance of LNG export to Qatar’s development. Ikawa told TBY, “The revenue from the production and export of LNG is helping Qatar to develop infrastructure, build roads and railways and take on the World Cup in 2022. Oil and gas is what allows the country to develop and embark on such ambitious development projects.”

DRILLS & FRILLS

In June 2013, Qatar Petroleum signed a $467 million deal with Gulf Drilling International (GDI), which nearly dominates the drilling sector, so that Qatar Petroleum would be able to continue using GDI’s flagship Al Doha and Al Zubarah rigs until 2018. The first onshore and offshore oil and gas drilling company in Qatar, since 2004, GDI’s newly inaugurated Al Jassra rig was sourced from Singapore and the company expects another rig in 2014, which will bring its offshore market share in Qatar up to 55%.

ENVIRONMENT & CAPITAL

Human capital and environmental consultancy firms have increased in importance. Brunel Energy specializes in providing professionals to a variety of industries, most notably to the oil and gas industry. Since its onset, Brunel Energy saw revenues grow more than 12-fold to QAR85 million in 2012. Brunel works with ExxonMobil, Shell, Total, and GDF SUEZ, as well as Qatar Petroleum, RasGas, and Qatargas. Enertech provides the industry with health and safety training, helping to reduce expenditure whilst providing for the welfare of their employees. Enertech most recently received British ECITB certification.
