SUPPLY & DEMAND
Over the last 30 years Turkey has been tackling the issue of demand versus supply. At the time when universities were originally set up, they were mostly for the elite. Now we’ve realized that we need universities to appeal to the middle classes as well.
I think we will eventually catch up with the West in the next 30 years. More [Turkish] universities will get into the top 200 universities in the world within the next 10 years, and hopefully the top 100 in 30 years.
THE NEXT STEP
First we were a local social science university, and now we’re a comprehensive Istanbul university. The next step is to be a comprehensive national university, and after that we aim to become a comprehensive regional university.

FREEDOM OF CHOICE
We believe that if you can choose what you want to study, you will be happier and more productive in what you study. Sabancı was the first university to start such a program in a serious way, and we upheld this point of view alone for many years.
FREEDOM OF SPEECH
We believe freedom is the most important factor in education, especially higher education. You cannot be innovative if you can say one thing but not another. If you are afraid to say something, to follow a certain path, or to make a certain assertion, then you will be forever stifled.
We are putting a lot of effort into the internationalization of our university. We want the level of foreign students to reach 15%, but for now it’s only in the single digits. We’re doing well on the Erasmus exchange programs, with 160 of our students going to Europe and 170 European students coming to study here yearly.
PROF. DR. AKİLE GÜRSOY
In 2010 over 1.5 million young people applied to enter institutions of higher education. Out of these, only about 35% were able to enter university or vocational school. Young people are motivated and want higher education, but are unable to enter the system.
The excitement of being part of the process of building an institution of higher education is great. To be able to contribute to the needs of higher education in Turkey is a very rewarding and challenging endeavor.
CENTER OF EXCELLENCE
The university has the mission of establishing a higher education research center of excellence focusing on health sciences and medicine. In addition to curative medicine and related health science disciplines, we value the holistic approach that draws in the contribution, perspectives, and strengths of other disciplines into human health and well being.
