Avianca wins TBY award

TBY has formally recognized Avianca as the recipient of its Eco-Friendly Aviation Award for 2016. According to TBY’s Country Manager for Colombia, Giulia Di Loreto, “The award follows a poll of TBY’s editorial board, which has bestowed the honor on Avianca for its energy-efficient fleet, its new, soon-to-be LEED® certified MRO facility, and its continued commitment to environmental sustainability in the aviation sector.”

Mr. Hernán Rincón, CEO of Avianca Holdings S.A., received the award on behalf of the company. Commenting on the award and on Avianca’s commitment to the environment, Mr. Rincón said “It is an honor for Avianca to receive this award. The new aeronautical center and our fleet of eco-efficient aircraft confirm our commitment to maintaining practices aimed at preserving the environment.”

Avianca’s new specialized MRO facility was built following the guidelines of USGBC® Green Business Corp., making it eligible for LEED® certification. The MRO is located at José María Córdova International Airport outside of Medellín. With an investment of more than $50 million, the Aeronautical Center was inaugurated on September 28, 2016. The final visit to achieve full LEED® Certification will take place in May 2017.

Avianca’s MRO has a total area of 44,300sqm and includes an 8,400-meter hangar (138m wide, 55m deep, and a free height of 19 meters), which allows for the servicing of five narrow-body aircraft or two wide-body aircraft simultaneously.

The eco-friendly features of the MRO include its system for rainwater collection, its efficient use of energy, its lack of industrial water discharge, and its noise-proof areas. discharge of industrial water and noise-proof areas.
